THE HUMAN EQUATION — ARTICLE SERIES

Notation in this article is structural, not mathematical formalism. Symbols denote categories of claim and allocation, not quantities subject to arithmetic operation.

A note for readers familiar with my previous articles: you may wish to begin at Part 4. The earlier sections reconstruct the underlying architecture and are included so that this article can also stand independently.

1. The Single Field

The human equation, H = M + B, places mind and body within one human unit operating under finite time.

B generates recurrent biological claims. M can retain intentions, projects, obligations and unresolved questions beyond the cycle in which they arise.

The two therefore make claims on the same temporal field.

2. The First Friction

Biological maintenance recurs whether or not a mental claim has been completed. Sleep, feeding, hygiene, recovery and movement continue to require allocation within the twenty-four-hour cycle.

Mental claims follow a different temporal logic. They can remain open across multiple cycles.

Most also arrive compressed: the self can hold an intention without immediate access to the full sequence of time required for its execution.

The first friction arises when the requirements of a mental claim are misjudged against a biological cycle that continues regardless of that claim's status.

3. Discontinuity

A mental claim can remain active while its execution stops.

Sleep, feeding and other recurrent requirements interrupt execution without necessarily closing the claim. The self must subsequently determine what is resumed, postponed, compressed or abandoned.

Discontinuity therefore produces reallocation.

4. The Self as Governor

The self governs this allocation.

As governance becomes conscious, it takes the form of resource allocation: identifying the claims being held, the limits attached to them, and the point at which reallocation is required.

This is the individual problem established so far.

The next variable is another human.

5. From One Human to Two

Let:

H₁ = M₁ + B₁

H₂ = M₂ + B₂

Each unit retains its own biological requirements, mental claims and allocation problem.

Once their lives overlap, each person's allocation begins to alter the field available to the other.

Preparing a meal, maintaining a shared space, paying a shared obligation or raising a dependent can require allocation from both units within the same finite clock.

One person's allocation has become part of the other's operating environment.

6. Cooperation

This creates the possibility of cooperation.

One unit can execute a claim while the other continues another. Coordination can therefore alter the total allocation required across the two fields.

Where this releases time or permits claims to be executed more effectively, cooperation reduces friction.

7. Trust

Repeated coordination introduces another requirement: some expectation of what the other unit will do.

If one unit can expect a temporary allocation towards the other's claim to be reciprocated later, every exchange does not need to be continuously monitored or renegotiated.

Trust reduces the cost of coordination by making future allocation more predictable.

8. Systems

Repeated coordination can become structural.

A household, team, company or government can therefore be examined as a persistent structure coordinating the temporal allocation of multiple human units whose claims overlap.

As the number of units and claims increases, so does the coordination problem.

9. Claims Within the Shared Field

Within a shared field, three categories of claim can be distinguished.

An individual claim is resolved within one unit's allocation.

An overlapping claim occurs when two units require the same slice of space or time for separate purposes.

A joint claim requires participation from both units.

The second human therefore introduces forms of friction that cannot arise in isolation.

An overlapping claim can produce friction through timing alone. A joint claim can remain unresolved when the required allocation is not made by either unit.

Each self now governs a field whose conditions are partly determined by another self.

10. External Interruption

A planned allocation is never entirely determined by the person who made it.

Another person's decision can delay a claim. A shared requirement can expand. An unexpected event can redirect allocation. What was available to one unit can change through events originating elsewhere in the shared field.

The distinction between intended allocation and realised allocation now becomes consequential.

The more claims surrounding the individual, the greater the number of points through which that field can change.

11. The Search for Direction

This becomes particularly important when the person is still trying to determine where to direct the field.

The culture of “find your passion,” “set your goals,” “achieve whatever you set your mind to” treats the objective almost as the starting point.

An objective first has to become identifiable.

Direction can require research, comparison, experimentation, revision and decision. Each makes a claim on the same finite field eventually required to pursue whatever objective emerges.

The search for direction can therefore become an unresolved claim of its own. Ordinary life continues to consume the field while the objective remains undefined. As this persists, the most visible claims can begin to appear as the reason direction has not been found or pursued:

Once this is finished.

Once this settles.

Once I have enough time.

The clearing may never arrive.

Weeks can become years while the surrounding field continues to operate.

12. Before the Objective: Establishing the Baseline

In the absence of a defined objective, the immediate objective is therefore to establish the baseline.

The Human Equation already establishes that part of the field is subject to recurring requirements. Those minimum requirements remain regardless of the direction eventually chosen. The particular structure of a person's life introduces further fixed claims.

Together, they establish the recurring allocation that will accompany whatever comes next.

The fixed requirement itself cannot be streamlined below its minimum. What can be streamlined is what surrounds its fulfilment: the prerequisites, processes and additional allocations through which that requirement is repeatedly met.

The baseline also carries variation. A recurring requirement does not necessarily occupy an identical interval every day, and additional claims can enter the field unexpectedly.

Establishing the baseline therefore creates visibility over the field that will remain in operation while direction is being found and after it has been chosen.

For those attempting to accommodate more within an already finite field, this accounting matters. The framework makes no requirement that everyone should seek further allocation beyond the life they already have.

The objective is to know the field within which any future direction will have to exist.

Once the baseline and the processes required to maintain it are visible, the governing self can distinguish the allocation required to maintain the system from the allocation that remains available for direction.

Only then does “achieve whatever you set your mind to” meet the calculation that precedes it:
